Core qualifications for ECEC careers

To pursue a career in ECEC, you can choose from several study pathways depending on your goals and prior experience. 

Employment in the sector usually requires an individual to have commenced or hold a Certificate III or Diploma level qualification, and the ability to obtain and maintain national police check and working with children clearance. 

To work in a regulated NT education and care service, your qualification must be recognised as an approved qualification under the National Quality Framework (NQF). To check that the qualification you hold or are actively working towards is an approved qualification, search the NQF approved qualifications list

Employers look for people who not only meet qualification standards but also bring warmth, reliability, and a genuine passion for working with children.

Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care (~12 months)

  • Family Day Care Educator
  • Early Childhood Educator
  • Outside of School Hours Care Educator

Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care (~18-24 months)

  • Family Day Care Coordinator or Manager
  • Early Childhood Education Room or Group Leader
  • Children’s Education and Care Service Manager or Director

Diploma of School Age Education and Care (~18-24 months)

  • Outside of School Hours Care Service Manager or Director

Early Childhood Teacher (3-4 years)

  • Educational Leader in a service
  • Preschool Teacher in Charge
  • Early Years teacher 

Study options

If you are a senior secondary student in the NT

Secondary students in the NT can begin studying early childhood education and care as part of their Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET). This allows students to:

  • Gain workplace skills while still in school
  • Earn credit towards nationally recognised qualifications
  • Become workforce-ready upon graduation

If you are interested in undertaking a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, contact your school VET Coordinator or Careers Advisor for an application form. Training is available in Darwin, Nhulunbuy, Katherine and Alice Springs. 

If you are a mature-aged student 

There are flexible and supportive pathways for mature age students interested in joining ECEC in the in the Northern Territory. This includes: 

  • Recognition of prior learning (RPL): Your past work or life experience may count toward your qualification.
  • Flexible delivery:  Many providers offer flexible study options to fit around work or family commitments.
  • Government support: The Department of Education and Training Quality First: Early Years Scholarships are available for students undertaking early childhood education qualifications at Charles Darwin University.
