Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher (HALT) certification recognises exceptional classroom teachers who consistently demonstrate excellence in teaching and leadership. Certification is based on the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, which provide a nationally consistent framework for making rigorous and evidence-based judgments at the Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher career stages.
HALT-certified teachers are recognised leaders in their schools and across the education system. They are committed to delivering high-quality, high-impact teaching that improves student outcomes and fosters a culture of excellence.
HALT Certification in the Northern Territory
In the Northern Territory, the Teacher Registration Board of the Northern Territory (TRBNT) is the authorised body responsible for assessing and certifying teachers at the HALT career stages.
To learn more about the certification process, eligibility, and application requirements, visit the TRBNT website.
What HALT Teachers contribute to Education in the NT
The Northern Territory Department of Education and Training supports teacher career development by recognising expertise aligned to the highest national standards.
HALTs are expert teachers and educational leaders who contribute to ongoing school and system improvement. They often serve on departmental reference committees and working groups, helping to shape policy and drive reform. Their influence extends beyond the classroom, supporting colleagues and strengthening teaching practices across schools.
Recognition and financial reward
HALT certification not only acknowledges professional excellence but also provides financial recognition for teachers employed in Northern Territory Government schools.
