Teach Up North Incentive – a pathway to become a teacher in the Northern Territory 

The Teach Up North Incentive is targeted at interstate university preservice teachers and interstate residents studying in an initial teacher education (ITE) degree through Charles Darwin University and are in their final year of an ITE degree.

Developed by the NT Department of Education and Training, this incentive helps preservice teachers from outside the NT plan a pathway to employment as a teacher in the Northern Territory.

What the Incentive Offers

  • $5,000 incentive for eligible interstate preservice teachers

  • Available to 4th year preservice teacher's at interstate universities or Charles Darwin University students residing interstate, completing their final placement in an NT Government (NTG) school
  • Supports both undergraduate and postgraduate ITE students

  • Up to 25 interstate preservice teachers (PSTs) and will be supported

  • A pathway to employment in an NTG school

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the Teach Up North Incentive, you must:

  • Be enrolled in an interstate university or Charles Darwin University, residing interstate and provide proof of enrolment

  • Provide evidence of successful completion of the Literacy and Numeracy Test ITE (LANTITE)

  • Be enrolled in a final placement unit

  • Complete the Teaching Performance Assessment (TPA) during your placement

  • Provide evidence of your most recent professional experience assessment report, showing satisfactory or above against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APSTs)

  • Demonstrate English language proficiency (if applicable) through IELTS, as required by the Teacher Registration Board 

Additional Requirements

You must also:

  • Have 6 units or less to complete, including your final placement unit

  • Provide evidence of satisfactory academic progress

  • Be endorsed by your university for an interstate placement (and under an employment-based model, where applicable)

  • Demonstrate the capacity to teach without direct supervision at 0.6–0.8 FTE if undertaking an employment-based placement

  • Hold or be eligible for an NT Working with Children clearance

  • Hold the appropriate visa with work rights in Australia, if not a permanent resident

Note: Eligible applicants are not guaranteed an incentive. Applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Who Is Not Eligible

You are not eligible for the Teach Up North Incentive if you:

  • You live in the NT and are studying at Charles Darwin University (CDU)

  • Intend to defer the completion of your teaching degree

  • Have withdrawn from an accredited teaching degree within 2 years of applying

  • Are undertaking a foundation or bridging course
