From Victoria to Ngukurr: Emily’s Territory Teaching Story
Originally from Victoria, Emily Ross had always dreamed of taking her teaching career north. Now in her fifth year, she leads a Transition/1/2 class at Ngukurr School in the remote Big Rivers region of the Northern Territory.
“I knew it would be challenging, but there was so much to learn and experience. Teaching is such a fulfilling job, being able to help students learn and grow is so special.”
For Emily, life and teaching in Ngukurr has been all about connection. “I’ve learnt the impact of strong and positive relationships with students and creating a warm and loving environment. Being able to see my students try new things and make mistakes in a setting where they feel comfortable is a special process to be a part of.”
The welcome she received from the community was something she’ll never forget. While the language barrier was initially a challenge, it also became an opportunity. “Learning local language and incorporating that into my teaching as much as I can is something that can make school feel more familiar and is an opportunity to show students that teachers can learn too.”
Emily has also stepped into leadership, taking on the role of Senior Teacher. “I have been able to coach colleagues to improve teaching practice, facilitate meaningful curriculum conversations, develop whole school frameworks that maintain consistency and high teaching standards at our school and much more A role that has been fundamental in my beginning leadership journey."
Her advice for anyone considering remote teaching? “Just have a go and be open to new challenges. There is so much to learn when teaching in a remote community. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done for both me and my career.”
