From South Korea to the Top End: Maryjane’s teaching journey
Meet Maryjane, a passionate educator making a difference at Manunda Terrace Primary School in Darwin.
Originally a middle school teacher in South Korea, Maryjane moved to Australia in 2010 to join her husband and began working in afterschool care. It was there she found her inspiration to begin a teaching career in the Northern Territory.
“Transitioning into the Australian education system was not easy, especially as English is not my first language. Completing my teaching degree was one of the biggest challenges of my life.”
With determination — and the support of mentors and colleagues — Maryjane overcame every hurdle. Now a proud Territory teacher, she’s passionate about giving back, especially to students learning English as an additional language.
“Living and working in Darwin has shown me how wonderfully diverse and multicultural the Territory is. I want to help students thrive and feel confident – just as I have.”
Maryjane’s story is a powerful reminder that Territory schools are stronger when they reflect the rich cultural backgrounds of the people who teach in them.
